Madurai History

The history has traces dated even before the world has started to stack down its records. When it comes to India there are few cites which is deemed to hold its pride from centuries ahead. One of the very old sensible heritage cities in southern region is Madurai. The culture, heritage, social, moral and ethical behaviors of the people lived over there is clearly evident from there passion for arts, sculpture and a number of predated books and scripts.

But the recent archeological study has clearly shown the evaluation of this very old ancient city located at the banks of the river vaigai. It has been also named as Aalavai in the ancient times. The recorded history of Madurai is starting from 3 AD. Further the details about this ancient town is not clustered in a single location its wide spread in various location. The historic important places of Madurai had lost its importance during the British rule in late 19th century.

To be more precise during the reign of John Blackburn in order to modernize the city he removed the fortification surrounding the meenakshi sundereswarar temple. He devised a plan to make it easier he sold the land and alleged properties to a particular community people. Based on this the three main access streets are laid.

The stones that has been broken from the forts are used to construct the Vaigai bridge. This is also used to construct the monument on the memory of blackburn who is collector of the region then.
